Ethnographic Study of Dreaming in a UK Sufi Center

I visited a Sufi center in a major English city many times between 2002 and 2004. I visited usually on the Sunday evening for a zikr, which is a ceremony in which the many names and attributes of Allah are recited. After the ceremony, a vegetarian meal is shared and after some time for discussion, people headed home. Sometimes, I also visited the Thursday evening zikr in the shaykh’s home, which was more informal. Both ceremonies lasted for about two hours. The main Sunday evening zikr was held in a slightly run down ex-church fairly near the center of the city. The shaykh’s home was near the Sufi center in the church. Normally no one lived in the church. My visits were limited to attending and participating in the zikr ceremonies, as well as interviewing the shaykh concerning his dreams. I had originally met the shaykh in the wake of 9/11 at a seminar at Newcastle.
